LET'S CHANGE

In 2023, the Yurok Tribal Council envisioned a nonprofit organization with a bold commitment to sovereignty and self-determination.  As a result of receiving a capacity building grant from the Tribal Nations Grant Fund (TNGF), the Yurok Tribal Foundation was established in 2025.

As the philanthropic arm of the Yurok Tribe, the foundation supports the long-term sustainability of programs and services aligned with the Tribe’s priorities which are centered around four pillars—Environment, Healthcare, Education, Community (Social) Wellness.

Yurok sovereignty is not symbolic; it is practiced, protected and sustained through action.

Reparative philanthropy supporting the Yurok Tribal Fund fuels the tribe’s ability to restore the balance through Indigenous-led stewardship of land, water, culture and community, and strengthens the tribe’s ability to govern, care for its people and uphold its responsibilities as a sovereign nation. YUROK TRIBE

[Federally Recognized Tribe]

What this means for donors

receive tax‑deductible charitable contributions.

If a donor’s tax situation or internal policies

allow for giving directly to a federally recognized tribe, then checks can be made payable:

Important considerations:

A pending application does not

guarantee deductibility.

IRS rules generally allow donations during

a pending application period to become retroactively deductible only if the IRS

ultimately grants 501(c)(3) status with an

effective date covering the gift.

If the application is denied or effective

date is later than the donation,

the gift may not be deductible.
